This drawing is for a dear friend who is being ordained to the diaconate on Saturday, November 4th, 2006 in preparation for the Priesthood. I thought that the subject matter was perfect, as he will be promising as a temporary deacon and future priest to pray faithfully the psalter, otherwise known as "the Divine Office," or "the Liturgy of the Hours." He will be praying each day at morning, midday, evening, and night for you, for me, for the Church and the world. The words are taken from the opening of each hour of prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours, and the Monk at prayer is to be a reminder to him that he never prays the Hours alone, but always with thousands upon thousands of faithful souls, both religious and laity, who are praying these same prayers with him daily.
More than this, my friend's personal devotion to the psalms and to the Sacred Scriptures in general lie at the heart of his vocation as a Deacon and eventually as a Priest.
