This is a drawing for Emily's birthday, and the second in a series I am trying to put together of copies from the great masters, beginning with THE MAN, THE DIVINE MICHELANGELO. Emily wanted an original drawing of mine to put in her classroom at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School, and thought this would be appropriate. It is my first attempt in pen and ink in a long time, and working on this drawing really turned me on again to the medium. In a tribute to Michelangelo, I signed the drawing "David Myers drew this" and the date. There is a great story of how Michelangelo, having just completed this work at about 22 yrs old, was standing near it when two or three critics were considering it. They were wondering which sculpting master had carved it, and they mentioned many names, but did not mention Michelangelo's. This perturbed him so much that he got up on the sculpture late that night and carved into the sling over the Blessed Mother's chest "MICHELANGELO DID THIS." I thought that this was a bit vain and even a bit inconsiderate of the Blessed Mother's dignity to do this, so I left his signature out. Sorry, Mike- you da man, but she is "The Woman." (Gen. 3:15)
