I am very happy with this portrait of our Holy Father. I drew this in honor of Pope Benedict's first encyclical, "Deus Caritas Est," "God is Love." The Holy Father appears in a washed out white light, accentuating the traditional Papal Cassock. "You are Peter...and upon this Rock I will build my Church." Such were the words of the Lord to His Apostle and to his successors down through the ages. It is a testimony to the continuity of the office, as well as to the fact that it is more the grace of the office of the Pope than the man that makes it great, that Benedict is said to be actually completing an encyclical that was being planned by John Paul the Great. I thought a quote from the encyclical would be appropriate:
"Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction. Saint John's Gospel describes that event in these words: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should ... have eternal life” (3:16). "
