SAINT THOMAS MORE

Here finally is my completed drawing (a copy from a painting by Hans Holbein) of one of my favorite saints, Saint Thomas More: Husband, Father, Lawyer, Knight, Lord Chancellor of England, and Martyr. When I have been wisest, I have turned to Saint Thomas More when I have had a difficult matter to discern, or a difficult decision to make. I think he is most remarkable for his prudence and for putting into practice the Lord's admonition to "be as wise as serpents and as innocent as doves." (Mt 10:16) All Christian men should look to him as an example of how to be a good man in a culture that is decaying. I hope that you will enjoy this clip from "A Man for All Seasons," Paul Scofield's masterful portrayal of Saint Thomas More, after the play by Robert Bolt:

  1. I have just read a wonderful biography on Saint Thomas More and I feel a true kinship with him for some reason. Not only was he a remarkable model of faith, reason and humility, he was unusual in his desire to educate his daughters as much as his sons. His eldest daughter, Meg, became one of the most intelligent and learned women in England. She was also likely the human being closest to him (especially when he was in the tower.) When she died, she was buried with her father's head. I wish to learn more about him and perhaps, pray to him (I am aware of devotionals to many other Catholic saints, but know of nothing for him.) And you are right - he is a model upon whom men and women should emulate in this day of moral decay. Your portrait of him is beautiful
