FATHER AND SON

Here is my latest work in portraiture, and the subjects are both familiar favorites from an earlier piece. This little fella (I believe) is now a lot bigger, but is still his father's pride and joy. The drawing was commissioned by the same person who commissioned this drawing, about two years ago:

It is gratifying for me to see in these two works how my own work has developed and changed, but also to meditate on the meaning of fatherhood portrayed in both of these images. The earlier drawing is a very playful, joyful portrait of the relationship between a father and his son. The second, I think, is a quieter, more beautiful depiction of the way that the father's life is renewed in the wonder of his child. To me, it seems that the truly invested father takes delight in his child's every new discovery. With each brand new moment, the father's life is renewed, and experienced afresh. I imagine that this must be one of the greatest joys of fatherhood.
