ALEXANDER POPOV: THE RUSSIAN ROCKET

This latest "Legends of Swimming installment is of Alexander Popov, one of the greatest sprinters that has ever lived. "The Russian Rocket," as he is known, won gold in Barcelona and Atlanta in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle events, going one/two with my favorite swimmer (Gary Hall Jr) in both events at Atlanta. Although dethroned in the 50m free by Hall in Sydney, Popov is still the World Record holder in that event. Even though (due to my bias) Popov will be overshadowed by Hall in the final drawing, he is still without a doubt one of the greatest swimmers ever, and a worthy adversary. Enjoy watching him win gold in the 100m free at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, 1996:
